Overnight Orphans

Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
I traveled to Haiti in the wake of the 2010 earthquake that shattered the capital Port-au-Prince. It was a devastating experience and didn’t know anyone out there. It was hardly enough time to shoot a full series, but I was determined to capture what kind of damage had been wreaked on the people of Haiti. Soon after arriving, I found someone who could show me around, and he took me to the heart of the devastation—where freshly-orphaned children being cared for by a heroic mother in a makeshift orphanage. Over a couple of days, I got to know the kids, and it was life-changing. The following photos are portraits of this experience, showing even in the face of unrelenting tragedy, these little souls keep powering on. It was an earth-shattering experience, one that changed my perspective forever.
